No Comment: Inception explained for Mac users

By 9:58 AM

Confused by the summer's biggest blockbuster and its multiple dream levels? Wishing Christopher Nolan had used some sort of OS X-related metaphor instead? Jonah Ray's got just the graphic for you -- he created a graphic that shows just who's around on each level of the vast dreamscape in Inception, courtesy of the Finder's clean and simple interface. (It probably goes without saying, but you shouldn't follow that link unless you've seen the movie already. -Ed)

Of course, I can't help think that maybe it would be a little more appropriate if all of the sub-level pictures were just aliases of the original pictures, since deleting them won't delete the originals. And shouldn't Eames look a little different when he's impersonating Browning in Yusuf's dream? Wait -- our heads just started hurting again. Instead, we'll just post this picture here with no extra comment.

Patents hints at iMac Touch and touchscreen MacBooks

By 9:58 AM

imac touch
With the sweet glass-fronted, LED-backed displays on the newer MacBooks, Apple seemed a step closer to giving us touchscreen displays beyond the current ultra-portable devices. Patently Apple has recently unearthed a couple of Apple patent filings that seem to point in that direction, not just for MacBooks, but for a future iMac as well.

Apple is clearly driving very quickly toward mass adoption and integration of its iOS software, and these patents certainly support that. As far as the "iMac Touch" patent, apparently you'd get the best of both worlds as far as Apple's OS offerings are concerned. Based on the orientation of the display, the iMac would switch between Mac OS and iOS. Lay it flat, you get iOS. Stand it up, you get Mac OS.

Obviously there are many Apple patents reported that never will see the light of day, but I believe this one has some meat to it. For an iMac refresh, this seems a very logical update. Though it makes sense we could see the same thing in a MacBook update, I'd say we'll see an iMac sporting this dual-OS first.

Google app gets updated with push notification for Gmail

By 9:56 AM

Google for iPhone with pushAfter many months of users having to resort to third-party or jailbroken apps to get push notifications from Gmail, Google has finally released an updated version of its iPhone app that now handily does that all for you.

The update -- which is now freely available in the App Store -- allows you to sign into one or several Google accounts and set up Gmail and Google Calendar push events, which work just as you'd expect. It's not yet clear how consistently quick the app is at alerting you of new mail, though it seems to have a significant delay upon initial testing. So far connectivity to my Gmail account using the Mail app responds much quicker.

As you can see from the screengrab of the update, you can specify quiet times for notifications, which could be handy if you tend to get a deluge of mail in the wee hours of the night. Google customers rejoice: push notifications are finally here!

LG GW910 slider turns heads at FCC; likes AT&T, Windows Phone 7, and long walks on the beach

By 9:49 AM

So, BEJGW910, we meet at last... or should we call you the LG GW910 with Windows Phone 7? Oh, don't act surprised, we've had you on our radar for some time now. You're not as sneaky as you might think, you know that? Sure, you thought your FCC meeting was a private one, but that foul temptress is not one to keep things to herself, and lookie, she's put some surprisingly decent shots online. External and internal, we're afraid. She also tells us you're wired for AT&T, is that to say you're in cahoots with Ma Bell? We've got all the photos ourselves now in a gallery below, so don't try and deny the rendez-vous. Oh, and your user manual showing off a "multitasking" button? We jumped ahead to page 25 and noticed the LG eXpo nod -- it's just a cobbled-together draft manual, a ploy to trick us. Good joke, you -- now tell us about your evil twin brother, C900.

Android's new app licensing scheme apparently easy to break

By 9:49 AM

Remember that new licensing service for third-party developers that Google started advertising last month? A new exposé on Android Police claims that it's actually pretty easy to get around -- easy enough so that the crack could probably be packaged into some sort of automated script that breaks protected apps en masse for distribution through pirate-friendly channels. Though that's obviously bad news for developers, it's just as bad for consumers on Android devices who've customarily had less support from top-tier software brands and game studios than Apple's App Store has -- not to say iPhone apps are uncrackable, of course, but considering how difficult it's been in the past to turn a profit in the Android Market, every little bit helps. Let's hope a renewed focus on gaming in Gingerbread helps the situation, eh? Follow the break for Android Police's demo of the crack in action.

Olive Telecom's OlivePad reviewed, we wish we spoke Hindi

By 9:48 AM

Olive Telecom's OlivePad reviewed, we wish we spoke Hindi (video)
Another contender has entered the fray in the great tablet wars of 2010. It's the $500 Olive Telecom OlivePad, a seven-inch, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreened device. Announced back in July, Indian television show TechGuru snagged one for review a few weeks back where they, predictably, squared it off against an iPad. The Android 2.1 device looks nice enough, but, according to the translation recently provided by Netbooknews, doesn't compare to Apple's device in terms of visual appeal. It is, at least, a licensed version of Android, with access to the Market and the standard Google apps, all of which look to run very well on its 600MHz ARM CPU. 512MB of internal memory is paired with 512MB of ROM, naturally with microSD expansion. There is also a three megapixel camera on the back and a SIM slot not only providing wireless data but also enabling phone calls -- though we'd advise taking advantage of the device's Bluetooth capabilities to avoid holding this chubby slate to your head. The full video is available for you after the break, but don't blame us if you only understand every third or fourth word.

Update: We're a little overwhelmed by the responses we've received from this post, lots of readers offering to provide a full translation. Savvy was kind enough to provide a closed-caption subtitled version of the video, which we've placed below (click through to YouTube to turn on the subtitles). And Sasha Chhab e-mailed us a full transcription of the entire segment, which we're also including below. You guys rock!

Sony Alpha A55 and A33 hands-on

By 9:47 AM

You didn't expect us to let something as delicious as Sony's all-new Translucent Mirror Technology slide by without us playing with it, did you? The freshly announced and priced A55 and A33 Alpha DSLRs slipped out in Taipei this morning, where our crack Engadget Chinese reporters were at the ready with their own picture-taking equipment. Early feedback describes the electronic viewfinder on these shooters as beautiful and very bright, though some rainbow-effect artifacting starts to become apparent if you shift your viewpoint. The bodies of the two new cameras appeared identical in the hand, with the big differences contained within, such as the A55's faster 10fps burst mode. The A33 is still no slouch at 7fps, though, and video of it chewing through pictures at that rate can be seen after the break. We've also got a sample from the camera itself showing off that fast continuous autofocus. All in all, our Chinese brethren found themselves mildly disappointed that Sony didn't go for a radical physical redesign given the internal rearrangements, but the performance and feature sets were nothing to complain about.

LG C900 due to bring Windows Phone 7 to market near September 28th, according to Bluetooth SIG

By 9:47 AM

The Bluetooth SIG has a long history of promoting its members' "special interests" by leaking valuable tidbits about their handsets before they're announced. The recently unearthed LG C900 is the latest of these, being pegged for a launch date "around" September 28th by the SIG's detail page on the phone. The QWERTY slider, which is referred to in C900N, C900k, and C900B versions, will be available in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Phone Arena conjectures that the launch date lines up with AT&T's marketing materials timing and the slated Q4 launch of Windows Phone 7, so the C900 probably has a decent chance of being the first Windows Phone 7 phones to market if LG's own GW910 or some more secretive set doesn't beat it to the punch. Still, September is a bit earlier than any of the launch windows Microsoft has managed to let slip, and as far as we know Microsoft won't even be accepting apps in the the Marketplace before October.

Samsung Galaxy S sporting Gorilla Glass to protect that precious AMOLED

By 9:45 AM

Remember this horribly painful video? The Gorilla Glass protection on the Dell Streak is undoubtedly a selling point, and now Corning, the maker of said glass, has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S (which includes the Vibrant, Captivate, Fascinate, and Epic 4G in its brood) employs the same alkali-aluminosilicate glass shield. The glass is similar to the "helicopter windshield" stuff Apple uses on the iPhone 4, which was rumored to be Gorilla Glass at one point, and while neither tech is impervious to shattering, they certainly can take a beating -- but just try and do that pen stab torture test while we're not looking, alright? We don't have the stomach to witness another beautiful Android handset so roughly handled. PR is after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 gets wild with Android 2.2

By 9:44 AM

Recognize those bits and bobs? By now you should. It's Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab and it's on the loose right now in China with ifanr to thank for this round of pics. Better yet, in addition to images that would seem to confirm Android 2.2 and a GT-P1000 model number, the site has also passed along the tipster's own impressions. First off, and this should be no surprise to anyone who's ever owned a Samsung product (eh hem, Galaxy S), the Galaxy Tab is very plasticky and much lighter than the iPad. Ifanr's tipster also confirms a 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution packed into that 7-inch display on a device that's much thicker than the Dell Streak. Other "confirmed" specs are a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G network, and built-in "ebook" app that's supposedly one of the best the tipster's ever used on an Android device. Of course, while this aligns with specs we heard about earlier, this device looks to be very much a prototype (where's the silver ring around the bezel) so don't take this as the final word on the matter, ok? One more image after the break.

Yes, that's what it seems right now. Techradar is reporting via their trusted sources that Android 3.1 will be codenamed Honeycomb. It falls in the line how Google codenamed Android's earlier versions. As we are still waiting for Gingerbread, we can't expect any details about 'Honeycomb'.

HTC Desire India Edition: What to expect & What not

By 9:41 AM

HTC Desire is reaching Indian shelves slowly, and it is time for us to look about what can we expect from this Android smartphone.

Hardware:

The modest dark grey plastic cover is an indication that HTC Desire is more about substance than style. A powerful 1 GHz Snapdragon Processor, a touch-sensitive track pad and clicky buttons differentiate it from Nexus One, its Google branded cousin.

What is also different is the HTC Desire lacks the noise cancellation feature as well as the voice recognition for texts and e-mails. However, considering that the latter was not very popular among users, it will hardly be missed in HTC Desire.
HTC Desire
Camera:
The phone has a 5 mega pixel camera. It is fast to start and the shutter lag is hardly noticeable. The LED photo light is quite useful when clicking pictures in the dark. The video recording capability is amazingly clear and changes in lighting are taken into consideration. The pictures taken are quickly written onto the memory card and it is an indication of the powerful processor and the 512 MB RAM.

HTC Sense UI:

The inclusion of the HTC Sense UI is the single most differentiating factor between the Desire and Nexus One. It covers the Android 2.1 operating system with an attractive user interface. The extra apps add zing to the phone. The Desire has a comprehensive address book that compiles all the contacts and photos from Outlook, Gmail, Facebook and Flickr. If only it could merge Outlook emails and other emails accounts and had more polished widgets, then it would have been perfect, but for now, we have no complaints against the available apps.

Perfectly Desirable?

Despite all its charms that immediately woo the techno enthusiasts, HTC Desire is not the perfect smartphone. The battery life is short and needs regular recharging. Taking off the battery cover causes its to flex and pop, which is a big concern.

If you are ready to overlook these glitches, then you have a almost perfect phone in your hand, that does not compromise on its utility functions. The pluses seem to overtake the drawback, and that is what makes this Android run HTC smartphone oh so desirable.

Dell Streak to hit Asia in early 2011, Aero before that

By 9:40 AM

Dell_Streak

Dell Streak

Those of waiting for Dell Streak smartphone in Asia-Pacific region, you might have to wait till next year. According to Steve Felice, president of Dell's small and medium business unit – "We have not yet announced the expansion plans for Streak in Asia. I suspect the early part of next year we'll see that product", reported PC World.
However, according to an earlier report, Michael Tatelman, Dell Vice President for Global Consumer Channel Sales & Marketing said that Dell Streak will come to India in October this year. So, I am not sure if India will also get the device next year. We are listening here  contradictory statements from two Dell Executives.
This large smartphone is already under-sale in in the U.S. and Europe. It comes with a 5-inch touchscreen display with Gorilla glass, packs a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, two cameras, including a front-facing VGA camera, and can connect to Wi-Fi and 3G networks.
The delay might be good in a respect that the version of Streak releasing in Asia will come updated with Android 2.2. Dell has also said that company will launch Dell Aero Android smartphone before Streak in Asia, so get ready to see Aero soon in your country.

Samsung Android tablet to be called Galaxy “Pad” in Korea & “Tab” elsewhere?

By 9:40 AM

Leaked Photo of Samsung Galaxy Tab

We have been hearing this rumour of Samsung keeping two names for its upcoming Android tablet, one for Korea and other elsewhere. Seems company has finally settled on a name for South Korea, and nothing innovative here – "Galaxy Pad", reported MK.co.kr. While in all other countries it will be called "Galaxy Tab" only.
As leaked previously also, it is almost confirmed that company will indeed be coming with 7 inch and 10 inch versions of the tablet.
Galaxy Pad will be featuring Android 2.2 on-board, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 16GB internal memory (32GB expandable), 1 Ghz CPU and it will weigh "370g" only, which is almost half of Apple iPad. Cool :P
Another bit of news is SK Telecom will be carrying the tablet in South Korea with immediate availability after launch in IFA Berlin.
